[ARCHIVED] West Broadway Urban Village Infrastructure Update

West Broadway Construction

WBUV

Broadway Avenue is getting over $7 million in street improvements. This will result in wider sidewalks, new bicycle lanes, bulb-outs for safer pedestrian crossing, a signal light at Alhambra, and one less traffic lane in each direction. Broadway on-street parking will remain available. Traffic is expected to flow smoother due to the signal light. Construction began with tree work in January 2017 and completion is anticipated late Spring 2018.

CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULE

The project started at the Fremont end of Broadway, moving towards Del Monte. Broadway is now a one-way street (temporarily) through the end of the project. Traffic has flipped and now moves from Del Monte  to Fremont during the current phase of construction. This allows for parking on one lane. Please be patient during the project and drive carefully. Construction is expected to be complete late Spring 2018.

Week of March 12

MPE has moved their construction work zone to the north side of West Broadway.  This week, their concrete subcontractor, Aparicio Concrete, has framed and poured concrete curb and gutter and vehicle parking areas, east and west of Alhambra and Hillsdale Streets.  Varni Electric has installed new streetlight conduits and foundations throughout the north side and installed foundations for the new traffic signal poles at Alhambra Street and at the Fremont Blvd intersection.  In addition, MPE prepared subgrade for the following: sidewalk areas, the bioswales, and curb/gutter at Hillsdale and Alhambra Street corners.  Rain limited work that could be done for several days this week.

Projected for week of March 19

MPE will continue to pour concrete curb and gutter and to prepare for sidewalk concrete pours.  Electrical and irrigation conduit utility boxes will be installed; this is a necessary step before sidewalk concrete pouring.  Weather permitting, Aparicio will begin pouring sidewalk from the curb and gutter to the back of sidewalk/building faces, west of Hillsdale Street.

NOTE: Cross streets are opened or blocked as construction phasing allows.
