The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reported that in 2011 almost 18,000 fires were caused by fireworks. Although fireworks are often used to mark special events and holidays, they can be a danger to you and your household if not used correctly.
Fireworks labeled “Safe and Sane” by the State Fire Marshal are permitted for sale and use within the City of Seaside between June 28, 2016 to July 5, 2016. For those who will be lighting safe and sane fireworks this 4th of July, a few important safety tips should be considered:
• Always read and follow the directions for each firework
• Never point or throw fireworks at another person
• Fireworks are to be used by adults only - Children should not handle, play with, or light fireworks
• Never attempt to relight or “fix” fireworks
• Only use fireworks outdoors, away from homes, dry grass, trees or other flammable materials
• Put used fireworks in a bucket of water and have a hose ready
• Be sure the firework is no longer active before you pick it up to discard in water
• Pets often become frightened by the noise and lights of fireworks – it is safer for you and your pet to keep them inside or moved away during firework use
• Light only one item at a time and keep a safe distance. Many fireworks come with a fuse that glows in the dark. Use a flashlight when lighting fireworks at night
Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
• Never experiment with fireworks.
• Have a bucket of water and a hose handy.
• Never attempt to re-light or “fix” fireworks.
• Do not wear loose fitting clothing.
• Never carry fireworks in your pockets.
• Fireworks are not toys
• Remember that even “safe and sane” fireworks can be dangerous and should be used responsibly and with caution
