NO TRESPASSING!

The Military Munitions Recognition and Safety Training is required for any individual involved in ground disturbing or intrusive operations on the former Fort Ord footprint to increase awareness of and ability to identify suspect munitions.  Seaside ESCA LTO Management Program provides this training through an online video training course.  This training course has been reviewed and approved for use by the U.S. Army, Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Toxic Substances Control.

If help or guidance is needed navigating through the training video, here is a Step by Step Instructional Guide to Completing the Munitions Recognition and Safety Training VIdeo.

Seaside ESCA also provides a Military Munitions 3R's Explosive Safety Guide explaining the munitions use on the former Fort Ord, guidelines on local digging and excavation ordinances, instructions for munitions recognition, and additional safety resources. This guide is also available in Spanish, here.

The 3Rs of Explosives Safety

Recognize — Recognizing when you may have encountered a munition is key to reducing the risk of injury or death. If you encounter or suspect you may have encountered a munition, consider it extremely dangerous. Remember, munitions are sometimes hard to identify.

Retreat — If you encounter or suspect you may have encountered a munition, do not touch, move or disturb it. Immediately and carefully - do not run - leave the area following the same path on which you entered. If you can, mark the general area, not the munition, in some manner (e.g., with a hat, piece of cloth, tying a piece of plastic to a tree branch or if possible, GPS coordinates using mobile phone or other device).

Report — When you think you may have encountered a munition, notify your local law enforcement — call 911. DON'T FORGET Munitions are dangerous and may not be easily recognizable. Never touch, move or disturb a munition or suspected munition.

PROHIBITED!

Metal Detection on the Former Fort Ord

Metal detection is prohibited on the former Fort Ord due to the potential for remaining explosives hazards.

In order to protect human health and safety, the City of Seaside drafted Ordinance No. 1093.  Ordinance No. 1093 was introduced after several metal detecting incidents by individuals were reported on parcels known to have ordnance and explosives (OE) or Munitions and Explosives of Concern (MEC).

Ordinance No. 1093 modified the Seaside Municipal Code Section 15.34 prohibiting the activity of metal detecting on lands know to have MEC.  It was passed and adopted on July 16, 2020 and became effective on August 16, 2020.
